In expressing the direness in the ‘what if‘ scenario of if we all had Alzheimer’ (primarily accelerated dementia and the effect of losing motor functions) what would the world look like. As birth rates are dropping and yet the population increases because we are all living longer, we would have to return to work in order to support the economy. There’s something almost ironically Utopia -esque though in everyone being forced to live in and savour the moment because that is all they have. Remembering no yesterdays and the future being ever uncertain.
The game “The Last of Us“ deals with loss in the context of a zombie apocalypse and I bring it up mostly because of the emotional weight the game brings to the narrative and playthrough. It depicts a reality where no one is immune to this disease and every character knows someone or will ultimately be lost to it. It’s a survival game but it hits home because of it human stories. It’s a father after losing his daughter learning to love someone like that again even when the steaks are so high.
There could be an anecdotal link that you draw between a zombie apocalypse world and Alzheimers. That no one is immune and you will eventually get it and once they do the person they once were is gone, and/or unrecognisable. Ofcourse the steaks are increased by making them once turned a threat to those around them.
